Erlesene Welten - Hungry Minds

"WORDS AND LITERATURE ARE LIKE ANTS OR WATER, THEY SPREAD EVERYWHERE, PERMEATING EVEN THE TINIEST CRACKS AND CREVICES" As this sentence from Orhan Pamuk is written out, at reading speed, on a black background, you hear the creaking of a ship, the splashing of water and voices from a distant land. Thus begins the new film from the Grimme-Prize winning director Beatrix Schwehm. The film tells of books and people, from the love of literature, and how the written word makes its way into the most remote corners of this world. The 90-minute documentary follows 3 mobile libraries: in Kenya, Mongolia and Bangladesh. It is a road movie about the fascinating world of books and reading. In the Kenyan bush, close to the unsecured border of Somalia, the librarian ABDULLAHI OSMAN and his co-workers bring books on camelback to remote nomadic tribes. In the withering heat of the sun they walk along unpaved dusty trails. In Bangladesh, a country repeatedly visited by flooding, typhoons and tidal waves, the architect MOHAMMED REZWAN has built a library boat. Complete with solar panels, books and computers, these floating libraries travel Bangladeshi rivers even during the monsoons, so that now over 90,000 families in remote villages are provided with information and reading material. In the short summer months of Mongolia, children's book writer JAMBYN DASHDONDOG uses the most unconventional transportation to bring the children of the isolated highland plateau 2 small boxes full of books. The readers sit in the shade of the African acacia trees, on Bengali river banks surrounded by drying laundry, or by a warm fire as outside the cold Mongolian wind whistles. Reading, they leave their everyday world, and step into a parallel world of poetry, of sensitivity, of dreams and of desires. Or they dive into the realms of mathematics, economics and religion, or they read stories from faraway lands which take hold of them for hours, days and weeks. A book can be a teacher, it can set new thoughts in motion or sometimes be a source of strength. For those who live in poverty or war, a book can allow in the optimism of the human spirit, even during horribly inhumane times. For those threatened with illiteracy it shows how to recognize oppression and opens new opportunities. As different as the 3 main protagonists may be, they have one thing in common: the love of literature and the respect for knowledge, which accepts no boundaries.
