A Fibreshed for London

It's no secret. Our textile and fashion industry has made a significant shift over the past 50 years. One that has not only removed us from the making of textiles and garments, but has also increasingly had a damaging effect on our environment. In 1950 Britain produced over 90% of its garments. Today, this number is less than 5%. Of course, some may call it an improvement, as we are now able to shop at high street brands like Primark at low prices like never before. It does beg the question, however, who is paying the cost? Has it simply shifted out of our viewpoint? More and more, with campaigns like Fashion Revolution's "Who made my clothes?" and events such as the tragic collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh (2013), the truth of the actual cost of our fast fashion industry is slowly seeping through to the people who are buying these clothes. The documentary follows these threads that lead the director of the project to meet with outstanding people who are trying to make things in a different way. There is a great potential, not only to provide a more sustainable, local industry, but also as an educational tool. Our future and happiness depend on the choices we make and the people we decide to support and surround ourselves with. A Fibreshed for London is a film about a community that decided to change their attitude and inspire others to make that choice.
