In 1967, at the height of the Cultural Revolution, Chen Zhen, a young student, is sent from Beijing to the heart of Mongolia to educate a tribe of nomad shepherds. Instead, it is Chen Zhen who will learn tough lessons about living in a hostile region, community life, freedom, responsibility, and more importantly, the ways of the steppe's most feared and revered animal: the wolf. Attracted by these formidable creatures and the complex, mystical relationship between shepherds and wolves, Chen captures a wolf cub and tries to domesticate it.
