Jean Renoir was born in Paris in 1894, son of the famous painter Auguste Renoir, he starts his career in the mid 20s directing some ten silent films among which Nana (1926). In the 30s he directs some of history of cinema's greatest masterpieces starting from his first film La Chienne (1931) and other films such as Boudu sauveÌ des eaux (1932), Les bas-fonds (1936), La grand illusion (1937), La reÌ€gle du jeu (1939). He spends the 40s in the USA where he will continue working: This Land Is Mine (1943), The Woman on the Beach (1947). Before going back to France to direct his last films (Le caporal eÌpingleÌ, 1962) he spends time in India (The River, 1951) and Italy (La carrozza d'oro, 1953). He will die in Paris in 1979.
