In 1976 a serious explosion at the Icmesa plant, Seveso, a factory belonging to the chemicals giant Hoffmann-La Roche. Jörg Sambeth, then technical director at Hoffman-La Roche, was accused, tried as one of the persons chiefly responsible for the accident, and sentenced to 5 years in prison. However, Sambeth, denied being the only one responsible.
