Geographies of Solitude

by Jacquelyn Mills   2022 103'

Sable Island is a tiny island in the North Atlantic off the coast of Nova Scotia. It has a diversity of flora and fauna and is home to Zoe Lucas, researcher, environmentalist, and sole permanent resident for the past 40 years. Her mission is to study the island’s animal and plant species and conserve the delicate balance that regulates this unique habitat, increasingly threatened by the garbage washed up on the sandy shore. This experimental documentary was filmed in 16 mm by innovative techniques that evoke the invisible bond between Lucas and her surroundings.
