Maria Totaro (Naples 1960), after graduating from university in 1985, moved to Haiti where she worked as an architect for 15 years. In 1994 she took up photography and began working on documentary films. Together with David Belle, a New York director, she founded the Haytian Eksperians production company; her works include Parcour d'une Fondation, L'oeuvre de Jean Claude Legagneur, Haitian Eksperyans. Over the years she collaborated with other directors on documentary and fiction films. After returning to Italy, she produced and filmed Battiti, il respiro del Vesuvio.
