The young producer and director Barbet Schroeder ideated a film in several episodes about the French capital. He wanted to document the profound change that is taking place in the city. Six directors were each asked to choose a district in the city where a short story could be enacted. They made use of the light, economical equipment used for documentaries (16mm, direct sound recording, etc.). The six episodes are as follows: La muette, Saint-Germain-des-PreÌs, Montparnasse Levallois, rue Saint-Denis, place de l'Etoile, Gare du Nord.
