Vulture Boulevard

by Adriano Zecca Documentary Italia, Guatemala 2004 27'

Guatemala City is a very violently contrastive metropolis: neighbouring the rich quarters are the asentamientos hallucinating slums which are crammed with the recent civil war refugees. In the heart and soul of this shantytown extends a huge rubbish dump. Every morning troops of wretches (the guajeros) pounce on the masses of garbage seeking re-usable materials. Many children are forced to work amid the stench of rotting waste, gangs of drug runners and flocks of vultures with whom they have to fight for chunks of rotting meat. A day in the dump recounted through the stories of these children.
