Based on Guido Vitale's book "Vita e morte dell'automobile" [Live and Death of the Automobile], this documentary was filmed in Turin and shows how the automobile has taken over city streets and squares, making pedestrians out of the rest of us. "We are immersed in a flow of metal, robbed of living space and subjected to unbearable clouds of fumes and noise…" The city center and outskirts alike are invaded by cars; the rare pedestrian zones are empty; city monuments and statues are threatened by the effects of traffic, as is our safety when we go for a walk. These and other considerations on sustainable consumption, environmental education and political initiatives were discussed at the National Forum on Environmental Education and Sustainability held in Turin in June. The address by Laura Marchetti, undersecretary of the Ministry of the Environment, opens and closes the documentary.
