Il ventre della città

Town's Belly
by Francesco di Cocco Documentary Italia 1933 12'

The documentary opens with the image of cows and calves: first out to pasture, then led to a slaughterhouse. The camera follows the men's movements, their tying the animals' forelegs, their butchering them.. From this point onwards, there is a series of images about the production of ice ingots, the grape harvest, milking. You see lorries carrying flour, then bread and spaghetti being made. In a street-market, surrounded by fruit and vegetables, customers choose and buy. This is the town's belly and the various ways of the food which keeps it alive. The film ends with several images of food swallowed by people of different ages and social conditions, up to a child sucking from his mother's breast.
