Situated between Tanzania and Kenya, Kilimangiaro at 5895m. Is the highest mountain in Africa. The Maasai call it the "˜White Mountain', the legend of which grew up in Europe in 1849. At that time no-one imagined there could be snow and ice at that latitude. However there is snow on Kilimangiaro, even if not for much longer. Since 1912 the mountain has lost 80% of its glaciers and it is estimated that within the next 15 years the snow could disappear. The lives and habits of the people living at the foot of the "˜White Mountain' are being profoundly influenced by the climatic variations that this change is bringing about.
