A crazy painter a.k.a. "the painter of agony" commits suicide in an isolated village in the environs of Ferrara after having painted a disquieting fresco: Saint Sebastian's martyrdom between two sneering figures. Stefano, a painter manqueÌ is commissioned the restoration of the unfinished fresco. The young man is haunted by weird events and what is more his friend Mazza, tells him a strange story, though poor in detail, just before disappearing.
