Spring, 2013. Zhejiang, an eastern coastal province of the People's Republic of China. Acting against her daughter's advice, and heedless of the political consequences her actions could have, Yan's mother denounces the environmental damage done by a paper mill that is polluting the river that runs through her village and she launches a petition among the villagers. This will have portentous effects on her daily and family life, already compromised by the disorders related to the pollution of the local aquifer system, besides opening an odyssey with an unexpected ending.
