Québec has a flourishing meat industry. Huge factories use standardized processes to transform livestock into food products, from breeding to slaughtering to packaging. To achieve this and remain competitive in the market, asylum seekers mostly from Latin America are hired to work in the factories. The newcomers are handled by a community organisation that mediates between workers and employers. Their narratives are interwoven with the images of crammed animal pens and chained dairy cows milked by machine: humans and animals tied together in an arid landscape dominated by maize monoculture.
