Gino Costa, an unemployed, stops along the Po River, where the old Bragana and his wife Giovanna keep a shop. The woman falls in love with the newcomer and has an affair. The two lovers decide to get rid of the husband feigning an accident. Their plan succeeded, their relationship is wrecked by the insurance money, which at first separates them and then brings them to ruin.
