Anote’s Ark

by Matthieu Rytz Canada 2018 77'

The Republic of Kiribati, an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, could soon disappear under water as climate change continues to raise sea levels. Amidst debate over environmental issues and appeals to have migration recognized as an urgent human rights matter, president Anote Tong's battle to save his country is intertwined with the fate of young Semerary. While Anote has been supporting negotiations on climate change and investigating the feasibility of creating an underwater city, Semerary, mother of 6 children, is wondering whether it would be better to move her family to New Zealand. A portrait of a nation determined to step up to the challenges facing it.
