Is there such a thing as an everlasting light bulb? Why do we throw out a malfunctioning computer rather than have it fixed? The answer to both questions resides in planned obsolescence, an industry strategy to increase sales and influence consumer buying behavior. Drawing on archive footage and inedited documents, the film traces the history of this market principle, conceived in the 1920s, with dire implications for the environment as a consequence.
