Campane d'Italia

Italy's Bells
by Mario Serandrei Documentary Italia 1932 16'

The film is divided into three parts: Mattutino, Campane d'Italia and Ave Maria (In the morning, Italy's Bells and Hail Mary). Each of them is introduced by a different detail of St Mark Cathedral's clock in Venice, at different times of the day. Sounds and images of many other Italian bells mix in a sort of audiovisual symphony: from Como Lake down to the South of Italy, passing through Assisi, Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Miracles Square in Pisa, St Peter's in Rome and Milan Cathedral. In faraway mountain villages and in cities alike, bells mark the passing of time to washerwomen, shepherds, farmers and gondoliers, rowing along Venice canals while one of them is singing at sunset.
