The foot of Vesuvius, the area of Campania the Romans called Terra Felix is scattered with over 2500 illegal dumping sites. In the provinces of Naples and Caserta alone, farmers have abandoned hundreds of acres of farmland which mafia clans have taken over for depositing often toxic industrial waste. In an initiative to recover former farmland, the Ottavia di Marigliano social cooperative has restored fields for agriculture, rediscovering farming traditions increasingly at risk of disappearing.
