China's Wild West

Il wild West cinese
by Urszula Pontikos Documentary Regno Unito/UK 2008 10'

China's Wild West exploits masterful photography to document a little known reality. Every winter in western China the Yurungkash river dries up, leaving its rocky bed exposed. The local inhabitants, the majority of which Muslims, mine the riverbed looking for jade, which is 40 times more valuable than gold. Despite the cold and the harsh working conditions, hundreds of jade miners of all ages pan for jade in the hope of striking it rich.
