Deserto verde

by Davide Mazzocco 2018 59'

Eucalyptus monoculture is one of the main causes of the devastating wildfire that swept through PedrÁ³gÁ£o Grande in central Portugal in June 2017, claiming numerous victims and destroying 53,000 hectares of forest land that will eventually become desert. Through eyewitness accounts and an analysis by JoÁ£o Camargo, zootechnology-environmental engineer, the film painstakingly pieces together history, current affairs, botany, climatology, and economics to illustrate the environmental and social impact of forestry policies that promote monoculture. A lesson can be learned from one person who persuaded his village to reconvert to biodiversity in a grass-roots effort against ruinousagriculture practices.
