Nero d'Italia

Black of Italy
by Valeria Castellano 2013 52'

Vincenzo Capogrosso lives in Viggiano, in the province of Potenza, where he has planted 170 olive trees. But 150 meters from his house is an ENI petroleum refinery, and the olive oil the land once produced is no longer wanted. A story emblematic of the situation in Basilicata, where 80% of domestic oil is mined, animals die from unknown causes, toxic waste deposits in arable land are discovered, and pollution levels are alarmingly high - little known to the local population.
