RAINBOW ROOM – Stefano Camanni on a Possible future

2 October 2021 18:30 Salotto Arcobaleno

Today we are faced with an ecological crisis unprecedented in human history. How did this happen? How is it possible that a species that calls itself intelligent created the very conditions for its own extinction? Is there a way out?

The book traces the history of the automobile to explain how we created today’s world and how the car symbolizes modern society, progress, and the idea that anything can be achieved. The book explains how society evolved with the automobile, how we got to where we now are, and that if we are to change our lifestyle, we will need to take a step backwards and to the side. The book does this through short stories, some true, some invented, that open our eyes to the road society has taken and to indicate a possible way ahead.

The first part deals with the history of the automobile from Karl Benz’s horseless carriage to Tazio Nuvolari’s racing car, the construction of the Autostrada del Sole, and the flying cars in sci-fi movies, in a fascinating journey to the impossible. Along the way, doubts begin to arise. Will burning the petroleum it took millions of years to make have consequences? Is infinite growth in a finite world possible? The second part tells of people and places that are trying to do without cars and what they represent, and to engage in radical action to regain the time and space that seemed lost.

The assembly and disassembly of the chain of events that brought us to where we are currently ends with an analysis of ideas that suggest new roads. The time is ripe for change. We’ve gone on a thrilling journey but we now have to slow down and learn how to live within our limits. A new, no less fascinating adventure.

The event is promoted by the social cooperative Arcobaleno and the Casa Comune, training school for education and cultural dialogue to promote the principles and actions of integrated ecology and justice, founded by Gruppo Abele in collaboration with CinemAmbiente.

The idea began with the desire to enrich the “diet” of the Festival through talks on current events with persons engaged in the culture of goal-oriented change.

The conversations will take place outside Cinema Massimo in a round room furnished with a bench made by the volunteers from Arcobaleno and from Laboratorio Migranti, which is located in the Pastorale dei Migranti, and other sessions designed by Sefano Macoz.

Passersby and audience members will be invited to take their seats in the Rainbow Room (with ample standing room) and to participate in free conversation guided by the members of the Progetto Cartesio.
