Having passed the 20-year mark, the Festival continues to go from strength to strength, with more content in parallel with the greater offer in environmental cinema. Environmental cinema enjoys good growth as it expands its interests and perspectives. This trend is evident in the films selected from the over 3200 films sent in, a record number, that explore an ever wider range of themes, with particular attention dedicated to advances in science and technology, and ever more closely in connection with protection of the environment, the development of eco-sustainable models of production, and future changes in our habitat.
A central place in the Festival program is reserved for the fight for preservation of the planet, as explained in numerous films illustrating the devastating effects of climate change, including Matthieu Rytz’s Anote’s Ark, the Festival’s opening night film. But there are also films investigating imminent scenarios. Of particular interest are the films about information and communication networks, their impact on health, human rights, privacy, and democracy.
The inner and outer landscape provides for a huge variety of places for storytelling: the poetic reflection on Nothing and our planet, as narrated by Iggy Pop, the Festival’s closing night film, Boris Mitić’s In Praise of Nothing. The films running in the competitions, the international short films, and the special events will be held in conjunction with meetings with international experts for in-depth discussion of the topics handled in the films.
A new addition is CinemAmbiente Junior, a self-standing sector addressed to young people, with content and activities geared to children and adolescents. Of special interest are the film screenings linked to the 17 Objectives of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development promoted by the United Nations. Another new addition is the film competition addressed to schools, for which over 300 film entries were received from around the country.
The Festival would not be possible with the collaboration of the Regional Museum of Natural History, the International Training Center, International Labor Organization (ITC-ILO), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the University of Turin, Legambiente, Museo A come Ambiente, Centro Studi Sereno Regis, and many other civic organizations. The Festival is an event held by the National Museum of Cinema and is supported by many sponsors, the Region of Piedmont, and the City of Turin.
