Akira Kurosawa

Akira Kurosawa belonged to the generation of post-WWII film directors. With Rashomon (1951), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, he revealed the richness of Japanese cinematography then still unknown to Western audiences. Following a long period of silence, he returned to the big screen with Dersu Uzala, which won the 1976 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
