Matteo Bellizzi studied at the I cammelli documentalists' school before making his directorial debut with the short Filari di vite (2000), followed by Sorriso amaro (2003) selected at the 60th Venice Film Festival and the MoMa, New York, and broadcast on RAI Tre. He directed and supervised the Piemonte Stories-Storie del Piemonte (2005) project, which comprises 12 short documentaries presented during the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic games; Mentre stai dormendo (2006) is a film reportage of his trip through Nepal on assignment for the 12 Dicembre humanitarian society.
