Leonard Retel Helmrich was born in 1959. He achieved a diploma at the Nederland Film Academy. He directed his first long-running film "˜The Phoenix Mystery' in 1990. He has made many documentaries, among which "˜The Eye of the Day' that has won many awards at international festivals; together with "˜Shape of the Moon', it constitutes a kind of diptych on the Indonesian situation of today.
