Jan van den Berg earned a degree in anthropology before directing documentaries in the 1970s. He founded DRSfilm through which he made, amongst other films, Silent Snow (2011) and the short When Elephants Dance, the Grass Gets Beaten (2014), which, by a personal method of working, inspired the feature film Silent Land.
