After graduating in
art and semiotics from Brown Universty, Todd Hayness moved to New York. His
career as a film director began with Superstar,
a much discussed short, followed by his first full length feature Poison, which was awarded Jury Special
Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. His next film Safe (1995) is considered by the critics one of the best of the
year. His latest work Velvet Goldmine(1999)
shows Hayness's love for glam rock: set in the '60s-'70s, it tells the rise and
fall of a rock star.
